Expo 2020 Dubai: Al Wasl Plaza / Published by Assouline, 2022

“Is it a building or a park? A free space or a shelter?” This is the question visitors from around the world might ask themselves as they take their first steps off the Expo 2020 Dubai metro station and walk toward Al Wasl Plaza, the structure at the center of a site spanning across 424 hectares of southwestern Dubai. From a distance, it appears to be a solid dome of unguessable proportions; a semi sphere whose geometric purity belies the intricacies of its construction. Its intricate details come into focus as one draws nearer, as the dome reveals itself to be something that evades easy description: a shading structure shielding a sprawling central park from the sweltering Arabian sun, a projection screen capable of producing imagery matching the intensity of any and all performances held within, and a central icon befitting a development as ambitious and as grand as Expo 2020 Dubai.
